Research Overview

As one of the few synthetic peptides with documented in vitro telomerase-stimulating activity, Epithalon has attracted sustained interest in cellular ageing and longevity biology research. In cell-based studies, Epithalon has been shown to stimulate telomerase enzyme expression in certain somatic cell types, a finding that positions it as a probe for the relationship between telomere maintenance and replicative senescence. Separately, its derivation from the pineal gland peptide fraction epithalamin has motivated research into its effects on melatonin synthesis pathways and circadian rhythm entrainment in animal models. Telomerase — the ribonucleoprotein enzyme responsible for telomere elongation — is ordinarily silenced in most adult somatic cell types, and telomere attrition with each cell division is a primary molecular clock of replicative ageing. In vitro studies using cultured human cells have shown Epithalon to induce telomerase activity and, in some experimental systems, extend telomere length over multiple passages, establishing it as a useful tool for studying the regulation of telomerase re-expression in somatic cells. Concurrent research in animal models has investigated its effects on pineal melatonin synthesis and the regulation of circadian pacemaker function through the hypothalamic-pineal axis.
